Our Story

Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed – not just in the classroom, but in life. This simple yet powerful belief sparked a transformative initiative in Toledo that would become TutorSmart.

In 2016, our community faced a sobering reality: too many of our children weren't reaching grade level proficiency. They were starting behind and they were staying behind. Rather than accepting this status quo, a dedicated group of community leaders partnered with the Toledo Community Foundation to take action. They commissioned Lourdes University to conduct a comprehensive study of tutoring services in Greater Toledo, seeking to understand both the challenges and opportunities in our educational landscape.

The findings were clear: while individual organizations were doing important work, no single entity could address the enormous challenges of learning loss and the achievement gap alone. What our community needed was a collaborative, systematic approach to after-school tutoring – one that would unite existing providers, enhance quality, and expand access to every child who needed support.

This vision led to TutorSmart's establishment in August 2017 as a community-wide, out-of-school-time organization. Our approach is uniquely collaborative: instead of creating a parallel system, we partner with existing tutoring providers and schools to maximize resources and create sustainable impact. These partnerships are truly synergistic, harnessing each organization's strengths to accomplish more together than any could achieve alone.

Today, TutorSmart serves as a catalyst for educational excellence in Greater Toledo. We provide guidance, structure, and support in best practices to increase both efficiency and effectiveness among tutoring providers whether they are schools or comprehensive after school programs. By coordinating efforts across the community, we're working to ensure that high-quality, classroom-aligned tutoring is available to every student who needs it.
